Our statement on the bias incident

Finally published today in the Spec...

    What can we Asians say? Typical white NYPD cops.

    As I like to say, "when a NYPD cop gets hurt/killed, I ain't shedding no tears".

    the spec did two things wrong:

    they screwed up the authorship, as I explicitly told them that it was a combined effort from many members on AAA.

    they have continued to hyphenate "Asian American" despite much protest in the past.

    sent them an email, but I'm not sure if they'll do anything about it.

    However, I'm not a negative person; they did finally publish it, to my surprise...and that in itself can be looked on as something good.

    Also, based on conversations in the past I believe that the members of the Spec have heard our complaints of hyphenating Asian American but supposedly "Asian-American" is the term they're supposed to use based on some book of editing standards.

    i'm assuming spec uses the new york times stylebook. the nyt (even the ap stylebook) hyphenates in order to "designate dual heritages." the organization i worked for this summer did the same, and when my coworker and i tried to change things, we were told to take it to national and/or the nyt. soooooo if we want to change things, take it to the top! hyahh
